No More Steelers of Old

September 27, 2011

What has happened to the Steelers we are used too?  Yes, the steelers have still been for the most part dominant over the last three seasons.  However, the Steelers play we used to expect from them no longer exists.  The Steelers used to be a ground and pound team with a tenacious defense.  This style of play represented the city of Pittsburgh and its blue collar workers.  However, now the Steelers rely on passing plays and athleticism instead of the things that have made them the most respected and storied franchise in the NFL.  If you ask me it's a shame.  Many might say the NFL has evolved and teams must evolve with it.  However, the Steelers ground and pound game was never broke we simply let it slip away.  Now it will take us years to get back to the way the running game was because they have let their offensive line be dismal.  Will we ever see the Steelers of old?

  1. Finally the Pittsburgh tradition may be going down hill in the next few seasons. Ben Roethlisberger seems to be becoming a more sloppy passer and not as precise as in previous seasons. The Steelers make things happen to cross the point, they understand the point of the game is to win and they ussually don't do it in style. I love their defense they have dirty players that know how to hit the ball carrier and find the ball. Polamalu is still a great safety and one of the best in the league but his time is coming to an end soon, he will begin to feel more pain each and every game and it will affect him in the long run. Their running game has not been up to par but i can see it coming back over time. Mike Tomlin knows how to coach and manage his team to success, I don't see them missing the playoffs this season however if they continue to not show their aggressive style of play it may be the first in a few seasons missing the playoffs.

  2. What it comes down to is the Steelers offensive line and they can not compete with their opponents defensive line. With a better offensive line the Steelers would be able to run the ball better and be able to protect Roethlisberger better. On the Sunday night game against the Colts I saw about three offensive lineman from the Steelers get hurt. It is ridiculous the Steelers need to make a bigger push on offensive lineman. Also with the Steelers defense it is getting too old. The are becoming slower against the younger offenses. I believe their average age is 35. On another note I believe the Steelers should not have re-signed Polamalu because he has only played one full season since 2005.
